Sustainable Campus (Green) Fee Funding

Submit an idea and/or a proposal for the 2026-2027 Green Fee Funding Cycle

The University of Memphis Green Fee Committee is seeking proposals and ideas from students, faculty, staff, and academic or administrative departments for 2026-2027. The Green Fee generates approximately $300,000 per year from students to be used to make the University of Memphis campus more sustainable. Currently funded projects may request additional funds for continuation of their project; however, projects are approved on a year-to-year basis with priority given to new initiatives.

You may view a list of projects funded by the Green Fee in the current fiscal year at
http://www.memphis.edu/bluegoesgreen/greenfee.php.

There are two ways to participate in this process:

Option 1 - IDEAS: You may submit your thoughts on how the Green Fee could be spent. You do not need to be able to actually carry out a project envisioned in an idea. It may be a suggestion about how the university could spend Green Fee funds to make the campus more sustainable. The Green Fee Committee will review ideas and consider them in making recommendations to university departments on future use of the fee. Should you submit an idea, we may follow up with you about future implementation, but there is no guarantee of this follow up.

Option 2 - PROPOSALS: Proposals are requests for funding from the Green Fee Committee to implement a sustainability focused project. The person(s) and/or department submitting a proposal must be capable of managing the funds in a university account and carrying out what is needed to fulfill an accepted proposal. All projects should be completed within one academic year, in this case between July 1, 2026 and June 30, 2027. Extensions are rarely provided so it is important to be able to complete the project during the year for which funding was approved.

The Green Fee Committee, consisting of students, faculty, and staff make recommendations to the Vice President for Student Affairs, the University of Memphis Provost, and the University of Memphis Chief Financial Officer on allocation of the Green Fee funds. Hearings for proposals will be scheduled between April 13-17, 2026. The Green Fee Committee will make funding recommendations to the Provost and CFO by early May 2026. Projects will be notified of their status by the end of May 2026..

Each proposal is scored based on the following categories:

** Anyone planning to submit a proposal that involves the installation or change of physical item(s)/structures must contact Racheal Walker with Facilities Development for planning, estimations, and approval PRIOR to submitting a Green Fee Proposal. Please understand that this process can take weeks to complete, so initial contact with Facilities Development must be made as soon as possible to give enough time for accurate planning and estimations.
