Profile
I have been at the University of Memphis since 1970, serving first as an administrator in the Division of Student Affairs, then as a faculty member in the Department of Counseling and Personnel Services, and most recently in the Department of Leadership. I have been the Director of the Center for the Study of Higher Education since 1988 during which time I directed the Leadership Institute in Judicial Education and the Institute for Faculty Excellence in Judicial Education. These programs have continuing professional education for more than 4,000 judges and other court personnel throughout the United State, Canada, the Middle East, Africa, and Europe. The programs have received the Howell Heflin Award, the Warren Burger Award, the Harrison Tweed Award, and the Tennessee Board of Regents Award for Academic Excellence. In addition, I have designed and conducted programs that promote leadership principles for members of the medical and legal professions. I also work with members of the clergy and other religious leaders.
I teach the College Teaching course and Continuing Professional Education, advise masters and doctoral students, and supervise dissertation research and writing.
My writing has centered around adult development, organizational development, leadership, judicial education, and issues of retention and student success. I have also worked with the Community College Student Experiences Questionnaire, a national instrument which measures student engagement.
