Profile

Dr. Carol Irwin joined The University of Memphis in August of 2007, and currently is an Associate Professor of Physical Education Teacher Education (PETE) in the School of Health Studies. Dr. Irwin earned her B.A. in Physical Education from University of Northern Colorado in Greeley, CO, and both an M.A. in Sport Pedagogy, and a Ph.D. in Curriculum and Instruction-Health Education from Kent State University in Kent, OH. At the University of Memphis, Dr. Irwin is the Coordinator for the PETE MS online program, and teaches both graduate and undergraduate courses in methods of teaching, curriculum, and urban issues involving health and physical education. Dr. Irwin has spent over twenty years in the P-12 schools across the US, specifically in Colorado, Minnesota, Ohio, and here in Tennessee. Prior to her tenure at the U of M, she was the Curriculum Coordinator for Health, Physical Education, and Lifetime Wellness for Memphis City Schools. Currently, Dr. Irwin is the Principal Investigator for several USA Swimming research studies, including “Constraints Impacting Minority Swimming Participation.” This nation-wide study was the first research to determine minority youth swimming ability, and to dig deeper to explore possible reasons why these underserved populations drown at such high rates. Dr. Irwin also was involved in exploring reliability of popular concussion assessments, and currently working on research investigation the reliability of the State of Tennessee Physical Education teacher evaluation process.
