Profile

Dr. Charles A. (Chuck) Pierce is the Great Oaks Foundation Professor of Human Resource Management and Chair of the Department of Management, Fogelman College of Business and Economics, University of Memphis. He was previously Chair of the Department of Psychology at Montana State University. Dr. Pierce received his B.S. (1990) from Syracuse University and M.A. (1992) and Ph.D. (1995) from the University at Albany, State University of New York.

Dr. Pierce's research interests include workplace romance, sexual harassment in organizations, test bias and discrimination in the selection of human capital, and organizational research methods (e.g., quantitative methods for estimating moderating effects in the context of employee selection; statistical methods in employment discrimination litigation; meta-analysis). He has published his research in leading scholarly journals such as Academy of Management Journal, Journal of Applied Psychology, Personnel Psychology, Organizational Behavior & Human Decision Processes, Journal of Management, Human Resource Management, Journal of Organizational Behavior, Journal of Educational Psychology, Educational & Psychological Measurement, and Organizational Research Methods. Dr. Pierce's research has been funded by the National Science Foundation and received awards including best paper in the Journal of Organizational Behavior and two Academy of Management's Research Methods Division Robert McDonald Advancement of Organizational Research Methodology awards.

Dr. Pierce has taught courses at the University at Albany-SUNY (1992-1995), Siena College (1994-1995), Montana State University (1995-2004), and University of Memphis (2004-present). He teaches BBA, MBA, executive MBA, and PhD courses in HR management, staffing organizations, employee training & development, and organizational research methods (MGMT 3215, MGMT 4260, MGMT 7220, MGMT 7250, MGMT 8220, MGMT 8921).

Dr. Pierce serves as an editorial board member for the Journal of Management, Organizational Research Methods, Human Resource Management Review, Journal of Business and Psychology, and Journal of Managerial Psychology. He was a Guest Co-Editor for a special issue of Journal of Business and Psychology (June 2014) and Journal of Management (March 2011). He served as an elected member of the executive committee for the Academy of Management's Research Methods Division: Treasurer (2003-2005), Program Chair-Elect/PDW Chair (2005-2006), Program Chair (2006-2007), Division Chair-Elect (2007-2008), Division Chair (2008-2009), and Past Division Chair (2009-2010). He served as an officer in and is an elected Fellow of the Southern Management Association (Treasurer, 2007-2010; Finance Committee, 2010-2013; Dean of Fellows, 2016-2019). He is Coordinator of the Mid-south Management Research Consortium (MMRC). Dr. Pierce served as an expert witness in an age and race employment discrimination lawsuit and a negligent hiring lawsuit. He has HR management consulting and training expertise in sexual harassment, workplace romance, managerial ethics & ethical decision making, test bias & differential prediction in human capital selection, employment discrimination, negligent hiring, and statistics used in employment discrimination litigation.
