Additional Information on Support
 

1.  The Focused Research Group project “Modelling Waves and Sediment Transport in Coastal Zones”,  supported by the National Science Foundation, is interdisciplinary. It involves applied mathematicians,  coastal engineers and Oceanographers.  In this project, I work with Bona, Karakiewiz and Thorton and others on wave-sediment interaction. This large project has many interesting facets that need mathematical attention. It is aimed at understanding the retreat and  erosion of unconsolidated coastlines. The underlying motivation for this study is two-fold. First,  there is a desire to understand both qualitatively and quantitatively some of the fundamental processes that lead to the formation and maintenance of bottom structure  in coastal zones and on continental shelves.  This involves a thorough knowledge of both the wave environment and the dynamics of the bed as it is influenced by the waves.  Second, and not less important, the project responds to the need for new and  more sophisticated tools to help  with coastal engineering  problems.  In particular, we are interested in developing so-called “soft" schemes in which one  takes advantage of natural processes to effect beach protection. The project has three major  components. To understand the dynamics of the entire system, we begin with investigation of wave propagation, then pass to a determination of the velocity field throughout the fluid domain, and finally aim to predict the resulting change in the bed structure via mass transport equations defined  in the sediment-laden boundary layer. My role mainly focuses on modeling and mathematical analysis. Currently, I am developing numerical schemes for various model equations. It is intense work, for the entire year (2004-2005), I was working on this research project without teaching dutyThe amounts  on the table show how I was paid for my contribution in this project.
