Profile

 Satomi Izumi-Taylor (Ph.D. Virginia Tech) teaches courses in infant/toddler development, constructivism in early childhood, and early childhood seminar. She also supervises doctoral students’ dissertations.  Before she began working in higher education, she was a preschool and Pre-K teacher in San Francisco, CA for 12 years.

Dr. Taylor’s areas of research and writing focus on play in different countries, infant/toddler development, constructivism, reflection, Japanese early childhood education, moral development, and play and technology.

Dr. Taylor has published numerous peer-reviewed articles in leading academic journals, including Young Children, Action Teacher Education, International Journal of Early Childhood, Journal of Early Childhood Teacher Education, and Play and Culture Studies.  She has also published three book chapters, and has published 107 articles regarding infant and toddler development in Japan. Dr. Taylor serves as a manuscript reviewer for International Journal of Early Childhood Education, Contemporary Issues in Early Childhood, He Kupe eLearning, Tennessee’s Children, and Play Rights.  She received the ATE Distinguished Research Award in 1997, the Who’s Who Among America’s Teachers Award in 2000, the Dean’s Outstanding Award for Research at the University of Memphis in 2003, the Dean’s Excellence in Teaching Award in 2004, the Who’s Who Among America’s Teachers Award in 2005, the Dean’s
