Dr. Mohd. Hasan Ali is an Associate Professor at the Electrical and Computer Engineering Department, and leads the Electric Power and Energy Systems (EPES) Laboratory of the University of Memphis, Tennessee, USA. He received his Ph.D. Degree in Electrical and Electronic Engineering from Kitami Institute of Technology, Japan, in 2004. He served as a lecturer in EEE dept. of Rajshahi University of Engineering and Technology (RUET), Bangladesh since 1995 to 2004, and also became an assistant professor at the same university in 2004.  Dr. Ali was a Postdoctoral Research Fellow under the Japan Society for the Promotion of Science (JSPS) Program at the Kitami Institute of Technology, Japan, since November 2004 to January 2007. He also worked as a Research Professor in Electrical Engineering Department of Changwon National University, South Korea since February 2007 to December 2007. He was a Postdoctoral Research Fellow with the Electrical and Computer Engineering Department of Ryerson University, Canada, from January 2008 to June 2009. He also worked as a Faculty at the Electrical Engineering Department, University of South Carolina, USA, since July 2009 to August 2011. His main field of interest includes advanced power systems, smart-grid and micro-grid systems, cyber security issues and solutions to modern power grids, electric vehicle charging system and station, renewable energy systems, energy storage systems, and load forecasting in smart buildings. Dr. Ali has more than 230 publications including 4 books, 8 book chapters, 5 patents, 84 top ranked journal papers, 106 peer-reviewed international conference papers and 20 national conference papers. According to Google Scholar, as of April 2024, the total citations number of his published research is 6,053 with an h-index of 40 and i10-index 110. His research has been funded by various sponsors such as the National Security Agency (NSA), Department of Homeland Security (DHS)/Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), Department of Energy (DOE), National Science Foundation (NSF), the American Public Power Association (APPA), the Idaho National Laboratory (INL), Electric Power Research Institute (EPRI), to name a few. So far, he has secured over $6M research funding. He received the University of Memphis Alumni Association Distinguished Teaching Award in 2020 and the Outstanding Faculty Teaching Award from the Herff College of Engineering in 2019. He serves as the Editors of the IEEE Transactions on Sustainable Energy, IEEE Transactions on Energy Conversion, IEEE Power Engineering Letters, IET-Generation, Transmission and Distribution (GTD) journal, MDPI Electronics Journal, and Frontiers in Energy Research. Dr. Ali is a Senior Member of the IEEE Power and Energy Society (PES). Also, he is the Chair of the PES of the IEEE Memphis Section. Additional Information

Dr. Ali currently supervises 5 Ph.D. and 3 Masters students. The EPES Lab currently deals with the following research: 1) Cyber Security Issues and Solutions to Smart Grid and Microgrid Systems, 2) Cyber-Attacks Detection and Mitigation Techniques for Internet of Electric Vehicles, 3) Data Analytics for Smart/Microgrid Systems, 4) AC/DC Hybrid Microgrid Control, 4) Distributed Energy Resources, 5) Energy Storage Systems, 6) Load Forecasting and Scheduling for Smart Buildings, and 7) Effects of Geomagnetic Induced Current (GIC) on Transformers. The EPES Lab is equipped with the latest computers and hardware facilities to perform research. The following softwares are available in the Lab: i) Matlab/Simulink, ii) NetSim, and iii) LabVIEW. Moreover, the Lab members have access to the Energy Conversion Laboratory of the ECE Department, which is equipped with the modern generators, motors, transformers, wind turbine and photovoltaic trainer, smart grid electrical generation trainer, various meters, oscilloscopes, etc. Therefore, the students have the scope to perform hardware based research also.

Appendix E - Outreach
  • Since Spring 2012 semester my research lab always participated in demonstrating about ‘Generation and Utilization of Electric Power’ to the elementary, middle and high school students on the E-day organized by Herff College of Engineering each year. However, due to COVID-19 issue, last few years the E-day event was not taken place. The Energy Conversion Lab was demonstrated by my Ph.D. advisee on the Preview Day held on Nov 11th, 2023. Also, this year my lab participated in demonstrating about "Indoor Solar Power Generator" at the E-day held on February 24, 2024.
